Pinterest Challenge - Week 5: Dog portraits

As you may have seen in my "Star Wars" blog, my friend Carrie got an adorable new puppy, Hoth.  She asked me to take some photos of Hoth last weekend.  I, of course, went to Pinterest for ideas on how to take dog portraits.

Here are some things to keep in mind when taking pet portraits:

1)  Get eye to eye with them.  It helps the pet become the focus of the picture.

2)  Use natural light.  Everything looks better with natural light...even dogs!  It's best to shoot in the mornings or late afternoons when the sun is coming in at an angle.  For the picture of Hoth with the black backdrop, I brought the black backdrop outside to get the best light.

3)  Use a word the dog knows (walk, food, cat...) to get a cute expression.  Since Hoth is only a few weeks old and doesn't know many words this didn't work for him.  I will try it when he is a big older.

Here are some websites with pet portrait tips I found on Pinterest:

Pinterest Challenge - week 4 - I love Lucy

"I love Lucy and she loves me, we're as happy as two can be..." This song has been stuck in my head all week since we had an "I love Lucy" themed birthday party for Lucy.  I saw this idea on Pinterest a while ago and thought it would be PERFECT for Lucy's 2nd birthday party.  The ideas I saw on Pinterest originally saw came from lilyshop.com .

Luckily since Valentine's day is right around the corner, there was a lot of heart party decor in the stores.  I hung hearts from our light fixture over the table.  I also covered the table in white paper and put some crayons out so the kids (and adults) could draw on it.

I used polk-a-dot material under the cupcake stands and printed off I Love Lucy hearts.  We also played old "I Love Lucy" episodes on the TV while the party was going on.  I also found a Desi Arnez station on Pandora for some Cuban music.

The cutie pie birthday girl!
Here are some goofy pictures from the photo booth...I think I will do the photo booth every year!  It is so easy to do.  We just put up a white backdrop and got a bunch of funny props.
Happy 2nd birthday!  We love Lucy!

Pinterest Challenge - Week 3: May the force be with you!

The birthday girl and Hoth

Happy birthday Carrie or as Yoda would say, "have a happy birthday you will."  Every year my girlfriends and I choose a theme for our birthdays.  This year's theme is movies.  Carrie chose "Star Wars."  She even got a puppy for her birthday and named it Hoth (if you know Star Wars, you will know what Hoth is).  For Carrie's birthday party we used all kinds of Pinterest ideas.

The awesome table

Menu
-Darth cheddar (cheese its)
-Yoda soda (lime sorbet and 7up)
-Han Solo Rolo's (Rolo's)
-Light saber pretzels (pretzels dipped in vanilla white chocolate and covered in sprinkles)
-Boba Feta Salad
-CP3O Pizza
-Princess Leih cupcakes (cupcakes with a Leih face and two oreos on the sides for her buns)
Darth Cheddar

Han Solo Rolo's

Light Saber Pretzels

Boba Feta Salad
C3PO Pizza

For the decor we used a black table cloth with cut out stars, Star Wars action figures, and a "have a happy birthday you will" sign.  My friend also found a "Star Wars" channel on Pandora to set the mood.

Puppies and babies!

One more adorable puppy picture.

We also played a couple of games...pin the bun on Princess Leih and light saber balloon toss.

Nothing is cooler than a bunch of 30 something year olds having a "Star Wars" party.

Rise and Shine

I am NOT a morning person.  Never have been.  But the last couple of weeks I've had a verse in my head when I wake up.  "This is the day that the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it" Psalm 118:24.  Do you think God is trying to tell me something?  I don't know...it's too early to think.

: )

So I used to lay in bed when I woke up and dread getting out, but not anymore.  Now I try to focus on the positive and think about all the great things that might happen and be thankful for all the blessings.  Like having a job that I don't have to be at till 11:00am.

For this is the day that the LORD has made.

This morning as I laid in bed thinking happy thoughts, I decided that I will have a theme verse every year.  So the verse for 2013 is Psalm 118:24.  I'm going to put the verse on my nightstand so I don't forget it.

Pinterest Challenge Week 2 - Crock pot Mac + Cheese

For week two I decided to try a Pinterest recipe that I've been wanting to make for some time.  Easy Crock-pot mac + cheese has two things I love when it comes to cooking...easy and cheese.

Easy Crock-pot Mac + Cheese

Cooking oil spray
2 cups skim milk
1 (12 oz.) can evaporated milk
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1 1/2 cups pre-shredded sharp cheddar cheese
2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni
flavored breadcrumbs or crushed croutons

Spray the Crock-pot with cooking oil spray.  Mix together the milk, evaporated milk, salt and pepper in the crock-pot.  Add cheese and uncooked macaroni.  Stir to mix.

Turn the Crock-pot on LOW and cook for 3-4 hours.

Note:  The original recipe called for an egg, but I opted not to use one.  I also added some flavored breadcrumbs to the mac + cheese after it was done cooking.  Here is the link to the original recipe. http://www.tip-garden.com/2011/09/one-pot-mac-and-cheese.html

52 weeks of Pinterest! Week 1

I am in love with Pinterest.  There I said it.  Pinterest and I decided to take things to the next level.  For the next 52 weeks I will be completing one project per week from Pinterest.  It might be something small like trying a recipe, new outfit, or craft...or it might be something big like a home improvement project.  Feel free to let me know if you have an idea of what to try next.

Week One:  Felt Christmas play tree

Image from Sol and Rachel do a blog

This is a Pinterest project I completed last month.  Lucy LOVED it!  It couldn't be easier to make.  I just cut the shapes out of felt and used double stick tape for the back of the tree.  Don't tape the felt ornaments or felt presents on...that is the fun part!  Lucy rearranged the felt tree too many times to count!  I kept seeing this project all over Pinterest, but I liked this one from "Sol and Rachel do a blog" the best!

Be sure to click the "follow me on Pinterest" link on the upper right side of my blog and don't forget to subscribe to my blog to see the rest of the projects!  One down...51 to go!  :)
